A Change of Path…

Hi all. I know it’s been a while since I’ve updated this blog, but there is a very good reason. I’ve been busy recreating myself, and that in turn has recreated my company. After 25 years of being known as “EarthDaughter Arts”, I realized the name didn’t fit the business any more.

But it wasn’t just the name. Life’s journey in the past few years has shown me that while the name and the business was a close reflection of what I am, it was not exactly who I am – especially now after so much growth in the past two years. I cannot describe it as a wild ride, but one more of intense study, growth, introspection and tearing down that part of myself that was holding me back from evolving as a person. I blame this on being Capricorn and my ruling planet of Saturn, which means I never learn deep, meaningful, life-changing lessons quickly…they take literally decades, even generations. But even though I teasingly blame it on an abstract astrological concept that was my potential at birth, I am tempted to take the full brunt of the responsibility for not having pushed beyond my limitations before now. I say “tempted “, because, as some wise piece of wisdom recently pointed out to me, we each cannot walk the path of life and evolution any faster that we have, or can, and are ready for the next step exactly when we should be.

If everyone would take this advice, it would alleviate a lot of guilt in the world.

So, I have changed my business name, mission and purpose to better reflect who and what I am. This took a little bit of time, and like the goat of the astrological symbol, I have pushed hard to get it done, yet started, so I can move on and explore its possibilities.

I invite you all to watch and participate in that journey with me. Friends have always been a very important part of my life and have always pushed me to explore the depths of my love and caring in my interaction with them. For this I am eternally grateful.

Our new name, starting yesterday, is KC Dragonfly. With the new name, I have a new virtual home at http://www.kcdragonfly.com/. The blog is already in place there; all the articles, images and link are there, too. I invite you to subscribe to the feed there so you don’t miss all the amazing crafts that we will be turning out and the sales and specials I plan on offering so all can come away with something that will romance your soul and be a treasure in your home and heart for years to come. Thank you, Antelope Valley

Antelope Valley Pagan Pride: I want to thank our new customers and those who wanted to be put on our mailing list. If you have any thoughts on what types of products you come to Pagan Pride to buy, please, please, please let us know. We want to hear from you - what you like, want and need to make your practice flourish. We were blessed with slightly cooler weather than last year. Hard to believe it was hotter in the San Fernando Valley AND we had a power outage at my house. That hasn’t happened in at least five years!

In the pre-show frenzy of packing, I forgot to bring our camera. If anyone has any photos from AVPP, please put them up on the ‘net and we’ll be happy to link to them.

A lot of you want to see new parasol color combinations such as teal & black and green & purple. Look for these great new additions to our line in the next month or two.

Intergem new policy and show tickets

I just got an email this weekend from Garden of Beadin’. Intergem is not allowing children under 8 to attend any more. What does everyone think about this? Also, if you want tickets ahead of time, you have to order them from your favorite vendors BEFORE the show. GofB will be taking requests for tickets to the Sept. 10th – 12th San Mateo show until the 7th (eek! that’s TODAY!) and for the Sept. 24th – 26th Santa Monica until the 21st. Grab ‘em while you can!

Products Added Week of August 22nd, 2010

There is a nice variety of new products being introduced this week. We start with our new, hand-decorated carriage parasols. They are slightly smaller to make them easier to carry in crowds, and they run slightly less in price for those on more of a budget. Remember, we can design them to fit your wedding or cosplay costume. Choose your colors, flowers, ribbons and decorations to match any costume or wedding or reception scheme.

Next are some additions to our earring and necklace lines and the second in our series of Multiple Pierced Earring Sets. The Seaweed design was our most popular of the many we carried for years and now is back by popular demand.

Gothic Lolita Black & Purple Parasol – flounced ribs – $55.00 – 26 1/2″ carriage parasol. Designed for close quarters and crowds. Parasols are perfect for weddings, cosplay, anime costumes, gothic, lolita, sweet lolita and steampunk attire, conventions and vintage recreation outfits.

Gothic Lolita Black & Purple Parasol – $50.00 - 26 1/2″ carriage parasol. Designed for close quarters and crowds. Parasols are perfect for weddings, cosplay, anime costumes, gothic, lolita, sweet lolita and steampunk attire, conventions and vintage recreation outfits.
Amber Striped Triangles – $12.95 – Triangle-shaped, faux amber striped czech glass beads with gold hooks. 2″ long.
Red Dangles Necklace – $26.95 - Red glass, 14k gold and czech glass dangle beads. 24″ Turquoise Striped Triangle Earrings – $12.95 – Triangle-shaped, turquoise-colored striped czech glass earring beads with silver hooks. 2″ long.
Seaweed Multiple Piercing Earring Set – $28.95 – 4-piece earring set with blue fresh water pearl, copper, glass beads and wire-wrapped seaweed with niobium hooks and gold posts. Longest piece is 3″ long.

See you next week!

The Project is done, but the work continues

And here they are – finally done, finally uploaded to the store. They turned out beautiful and I am so excited to bring them to you. They are parasols - perfect for weddings, cosplay, anime costumes, gothic, lolita, sweet lolita and steampunk attire, conventions and vintage recreation outfits. Now that I have the hang of them, I can custom make to match anyone’s needs. Think of the possibilities and let your imaginations run wild.

A Bit Late, but Worth the Wait

EarthDaughter Arts new project preview

That rhymed…just noticed that. That’s a good sign as the last time I did any large scale project, it was for our beloved Jim Carrey Grinch costume and we all know how Whos (and Whats) like to rhyme.

I am late with the update this week because of what I’ve been referring to as “the project”. It has been eating my life since before San Diego Comic Con, has been evolving as I pushed it past the dreaded R & D “learning curve”, has been lovingly crafted whilst listening to hours and hours and hours of the very best of Big Finish Doctor Who Classic Doctor audio plays (yes, go ahead and twist my arm to listen to the smooth voice of Peter Davison and his more Edwardianly evolved incarnation Paul McGann).

At last I picked up speed this week and the final construction on “the project” flew at a breakneck pace. Today I hit Costume College’s Marketplace in Woodland Hills and run downtown with my roomie Darc to buy more supplies to expand the line that will be this new product for EarthDaughter Arts.

Stay tuned for the premiere of the new line this coming week (as long as the pictures and setting cooperate)

Acrylic Flowers, Kumihimo and Wire Lace, oh my!

Did anyone else local go to the Pasadena Bead & Design Show today? Love that show. Too bad it’s only twice a year. Blew way too much money, as usual, even tho I was more restrained this time. I was so excited to see that the little, acrylic flowers that were popular in the 80s are back. Picked up some really pretty ones. And some Wire Lace for some focal beads.
Probably my most exciting buy was a Kumihimo Disk kit. Does anyone do Kumihimo? Do you have any ideas/tips/tricks to share? I think that and the wire lace and all the yarns I’ve been hunting and gathering lately will solve my dilemmas of what to use to hang my beaded bottles off of.So, if anyone else went, what did they get? What shows do you haunt near you? I’ve never been to a bead show outside California and I’m curious as to what’s out there.

To Fit or Not to Fit in

I don’t think the idea is to fit in. I think it is to stand out.

Remember when we were teenagers trying to find our place in life? We wanted to be different (at least my generation did – and the one before it, come to think of it)? Now, here I am grown up and I’ve forgotten that. Trying to fit in was painful when we weren’t accepted, but being different carried its own kind of pain. We suffer when we try to hold to the world’s standards of what it thinks we should be.

Even my business coach last year and all the business education I took reminded me of that. You don’t get anywhere in life “fitting in”. My coach said, “Try doing something exactly the opposite OR take what they are doing and improve on it”, but the message was always, “do something that differentiates you from the next guy”.

People grasp this concept for a while, then forget about it. Did we stick to the ad campaign, “Dare to be different?”. It came and went like every other fad in advertising because after a while you can’t hold people’s attention saying the same thing over and over unless they have a vested interest in your message. An emotional investment that benefits them in some way. Something else I learned in my Law of Attraction: Black Belt in Excellence training.

The Black Belt course proved it as one of the laws of the Universe.  “Fitting in”, or aligning yourself with others gives your power and energy over to them and you just fade away into the background, into the ether. “Nice women rarely make history”, or whatever the saying is. A variation on that in one of my favorite Doctor Who Big Finish audio productions was spoken by Rassilon, the greatest figure in Time Lord history. He said, “One does not make history at the bottom of the garden shed”.

In other words, don’t hide if you want to get noticed. Don’t blend in. You will be doing yourself – and the world – a disservice, denying it the beauty that is you.

Products Added Week of July 25th, 2010

The convention was fun and it is always refreshing to get away from the studio, but I have started back so recently on jewelry-making, I am still fired up and want to keep working…the heck with networking, the heck with the computer (that makes my husband’s mouth open in shock, believe me), the heck with sleeping and eating and such. It is true that when you do what you love, one doesn’t want to stop and one wakes up not being able to wait to do what they love. With me, it has been a similar experience except that I work late into the night and weirdly need much less sleep than usual…four hours can do me just fine and I can do that for days. Strange, but that might be my gothy nature peeking out.

I wasn’t able to begin any new projects this week, but have put up some pieces that escaped previewing last week. Here you will find more diachroics and a spiderweb-like necklace…my journey into the realm of asymmetrical design.

Spiderweb Necklace – 14k gold and crystal. $49.95.
Diachroic earrings – Blood Red – $19.95 Diachroic earrings – Powder Blue – $19.95
Diachroic earrings – Purple – $19.95 Diachroic earrings – Turquoise Green – $19.95
Still working on the “special new product”. The prototype is proving to be a challenge and while one version was worked out, the further work on it needs tweaking. It is slow going as I have to work on it inbetween the regular work of redesigning old product, coming up with new and sprinkling it across the ‘net like fairy dust. Still, it is exciting enough that enthusiasm for its premiere makes me attack the project with constantly renewing determination. I won’t rest until it is done!

Doctor Who David Tennant Tonner Doll

Tonner David Tennant Doctor Who doll

Am at San Diego Comic Con this weekend. Overwhelming, as usual. I stopped by the Tonner booth (stumbled across it, actually) and got to see the Doctor Who dolls up close and personal. The Tennant one looks better here than in the photos. The Martha, Jack Harkness & Gwen dolls are awesome. Am contemplating getting the Tennant Doctor doll so I can make him the blue outfit. Wonder how many people would buy it if I sold them? Hmmm….
